Esashi-cho, which can be reached in about one and a half hours by car from Hakodate,
was the first place in Hokkaido to open a port.
Esashi, which prospered from the Edo era to the Meiji era, has many historical and cultural heritages.
This is "Michino-eki Esashi".

The self-proclaimed smallest Michi-no-Eki in Japan, it is a building that is smaller than the toilet next to it.
There is also a statue of Shigejiro Shigejiro, a comedian who is said to have existed in Esashi during the Edo era.
Shigejiro's characters can be found in various places in Esashi and Hakodate, so be sure to check them out!
At "Esashi Uminoeki Kaiyomaru" in Esashi Port Marina,
you can purchase Esashi's specialties, agricultural products and seafood.
The Esashi Tourist Information Center is also located in this building.
The inside of this huge ship is the Kaiyomaru Memorial Hall.
About 3,000 pieces of relics salvaged from the sea floor are on display inside the ship,
which was restored from the end of the Edo period, the Kaiyomaru.
It is also possible to climb the deck and enjoy the nearby scenery.
Entering Kamome Island right next to Kaiyomaru, this red torii gate and a legendary rock called Heishi-iwa are famous.
Also, there is a well-maintained promenade on Kamome Island,
you can go around the whole island in about two hours.
Inside the small island, there are plenty of sights to see, such as the ruins of Senryojiki and Itsukushima Shrine.
It is a historical cultural property,
but there are also many people who come here to enjoy leisure activities such as fishing and camping.
